How to find your Design Niche and grow your Business
Should you choose a niche as a designer? I guarantee it will cross your mind at some point; and the internet is full of people saying you should or shouldn’t.
So i’ve compiled my thoughts from being on both sides of this debate.
I’ll get straight into the pros and cons and then we can look at a load of examples to give you some ideas on which niches work well with examples of agencies working in those niches:
The Pros of Niching
Specialization: Becoming an expert in a specific area allows you to offer highly specialized services. If you stick at it and build your reputation, you’ll also be able to command higher rates for your expertise.
Targeted Marketing: If you’re a small or solo agency, you won’t have bucket loads of money to spend on marketing. Niche specialization enables you to tailor your marketing efforts to a specific audience, which increases the likelihood of attracting clients who are actively seeking your services.
Competitive Advantage: Standing out in a particular niche can differentiate you from generalist designers, making it easier to win clients and establish yourself as a go-to expert. I’ve seen this first hand on many pitches. Some where i’ve won because i’m in the niche, some in the past where I was a generalist and lost out to an agency focussed in the niche.
Deeper Understanding: Focusing on a niche allows you to develop a deeper understanding of your clients’ needs, leading to more effective solutions and satisfied customers. You’ll be able to use the terminology the market uses and have the right converations that lead to higher quality client interactions.
Networking Opportunities: Niche specialization can lead to networking opportunities within your chosen industry or community, potentially opening doors to collaborations, partnerships, and referrals. You could also get speaking opportunities at specific events making you even more established.
But… it’s not all great all the time. So let’s look at the cons.
The Cons of Niching:
Limited Client Pool: Focusing on one niche could potentially limit your potential client pool, especially if the niche is too small or specialized, which could impact your ability to find consistent work.
Market Volatility: Niche markets can be more susceptible to economic fluctuations or industry-specific challenges, potentially affecting the stability of your client base. For example, if you only worked with events companies, you could have had a rough time in the Covid lockdowns.
Skill Diversification: Narrowing your focus to a niche may limit your opportunities to broaden your skill set or explore new design trends and technologies. However, there’s always ways to keep your skills fresh on other projects.
